Our Goal:
is to demolish myths and untruths that political and religious organizations have long employed to subjugate, repress, and impoverish humankind. By doing so, Spirits at Play aims to free our human spirits to experience the pleasure, the joy, the glory, and the growth which is our birthright as experiential units of the Universal Consciousness.

frown July 25 — A new South Dakota law mandates displaying an “In God We Trust” logo in all public schools. The law — insultingly confusing patriotism with piety — is part of the nationwide legislative push by Project Blitz, which is a stealth campaign to inject religious bills into state legislatures across the country. [read more]
frown July 16 — The city of Mount Vernon, Ill., has issued a proclamation establishing a day to “recognize God in our City.” Further, Mount Vernon took the step of officially recognizing “the biblical five-fold ministry of apostles, prophets, teachers, pastors, and evangelists.” By so doing, the city unilaterally decided to discard the Constitutionally mandated separation of church and state in favor of the mayor’s preferred vision of a Christian theocracy. frown July 16 — The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs recently announced a change to its directive on “Religious Symbols in VA Facilities.”  Instead of protecting religious freedom, the new guidelines will embolden misguided government employees to promote religion with government-endorsed displays on federal property. smileJuly 12 — The U.S. House of Representatives approved two amendments to the Fiscal Year 2020 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) that would expand contraception and reproductive health care access for service members. Most service members receive health insurance coverage through TRICARE, which currently does not offer comprehensive contraception coverage and reproductive health care resources for service members and their families. smile July 8 — The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals today unanimously ruled that the Brevard County, Fla., Commissioners’ policy of using religious beliefs to determine who can offer invocations at public meetings is unconstitutional, discriminatory and a violation of religious freedom. Judge Stanley Marcus opined: “In selecting invocation speakers, the commissioners may not categorically exclude from consideration speakers from a religion simply because they do not like the nature of its beliefs.” [see details]
neutralJune 28 — A new study by European researchers has found one in 10 people have undergone a “near-death experience.” The findings were presented at the fifth European Academy of Neurology Congress. The study analyzed 1,034 people from 35 countries and found that 289 people reported a near-death experience with varying spiritual and physical symptoms. [see details]
frownJune 27 — Arkansas legislators have passed a law that bans abortion based on a person’s motivation for seeking one. This would turn patients into suspects, health providers into investigators, and clinics into interrogation rooms. [read more]

Lie of the Month

The physical is inferior to the spiritual.

This is one of “The Most Insidious Lies” because it introduced priests and polticians to the idea of shame, a weapon they have wielded for millennia with catastrophic results for the minds and institutions of man. The text below explains some of the dangers of thinking that our physical bodies are intrinsically corrupt. This is followed by a rather alarming look at the way women have been held responsible for this supposed corruption. . . . . [read more]

Worth Repeating This Month

"There is no rational reason why a general acceptance of the fact of survival should be delayed any longer."Jerome Ellison

"You can sway a thousand men by appealing to their prejudices quicker than you can convince one man by logic. It doesn’t have to be a prejudice about an important matter either." —Robert A. Heinlein

“When you have found yourself, you have found God, the universal principle. ... God is expressing Himself through every form of life.” —Agasha

This Month's Reading List

Book CoverThe Dark Side of Christian History, Helen Ellerbe
Over the past 2 millenia, the Christian church has oppressed, brutilized, and killed millions of individuals in their rather successful efforts to control and repress spirituality. This book reveaks in painstaking detail the tragedies, sorrows, and injustices inflicted upon humanity by the church. Ellerbe's expose is a compelling and passionate cry for human disnity and spiritual freedom. Required reading for all playful spirits.
Book CoverStranger in a Strange Land, Robert A. Heinlein
So far, this is the only work of fiction to make the list from which these recommended readings are derived. At once fiercely libertarian and deeply compassionate, Heinlein helped usher in the New Age with military precision. A true masterpiece that shaped the sensibilities of more than one generation, Stranger is Heinlein's most influential work. (His very best, if social impact is not taken into account, is Time Enough for Love.)
Book CoverThe Afterlife Experiments: Breakthrough Scientific Evidence of Life After Death, Gary Schwartz, Ph.D.
Risking his academic reputation, Dr. Gary E. Schwartz asked well-known mediums to become part of a series of experiments to prove, or disprove, the existence of an afterlife. This riveting narrative, with electrifying transcripts, documents stringently monitored experiments in which mediums attempted to contact dead friends and relatives of "sitters" who were masked from view and never spoke, depriving the mediums of any cues. Here are the results that awed sitters and researchers alike.
Book CoverTeachings of Silver Birch, via Maurice Barbanell
Of all the masters, saviors, gurus, and self-help authors who have offered advice on who we are, and how we relate to each other and to our Creator, Silver Birch strikes me as not only the wisest, but the friendliest and the easiset to understand. Barbanell was a journalist, an agnostic, who first attended a Spiritualist "home circle" to investigate and wound up spending the next 50 years speaking in trance for Silver Birch.
