neutral Facebook has updated their community standards to ban “content attacking concepts, institutions, ideas, practices, or beliefs associated with protected characteristics, which are likely to contribute to imminent physical harm, intimidation or discrimination.” This is a departure from the previous policy, which rightfully protected individuals, but allowed for persecuted groups, such as ex-Muslims, to speak out against the harmful or discriminatory practices of religious institutions. Lie of the Month

The end justifies the means.

When you look back on your life on Earth, you will feel little or no pride in your material accomplishments, but you will be pleased — or displeased — with what you have become. In the end, the only thing that counts is the quality of a person’s character. This is evaluated according to how well that person followed his or her conscience.… [read more]

The Social Relevance of Reincarnation

. . . From the reincarnationalist viewpoint, history is not a record of the world's power struggles; it is the record of learning and awakening. Society moves into a higher mode of living when enough individuals have the feeling, "been there, done that, got the shirt." And they have that intuitive feeling precisely because they have learned the lesson in past lives. A careful study of how these lessons get learned from lifetime to lifetime would shed a great deal of light on how societies as a whole progress.  . . .  [read more]

Where There's a Will

Case #73: it sounds like an urban legend or the plot to a grade-B spook movie. A man dies leaving all his property to one of his four sons, but one of the disinherited has a dream in which the father points the way to an unknown, newer will which gives equal shares to all of his sons. … How very convenient!  So, why did the court accept it? Worth Repeating This Month
“In the course of the work, most of the leading members who have conducted personal investigations have become convinced that man survives bodily death; but it has been regarded as not always good policy to avow the conviction with any missionary zeal. Hence, conviction on the point appears to the public to be less strong than it actually is.” — James H. Hyslop, Ph.D., LL.D.
"Very importantly, the divorce between the sexual life and fear, and the sexual life and disease, and the sexual life and tyranny, can now at last be attempted, on the sole condition that we banish all religions from the discourse." — Christopher Hitchens

This Month's Recommended Reading

These items are recommended as sources of valuable information and insights. We believe them to be largely accurate and useful. Thy do not, however, necessarily represent the offical position or worldview of Rational Spiritism.
Book CoverA History of God: The 4,000-Year Quest of Judaism, Christianity and Islam, Karen Armstrong
Despite the title, this is not a history of God — that would obviously be impossible — but it is a fairly readable and most useful history of the growth of western religions. All people interested in freeing themselves from the bonds those tryannical organizations have imposed should avail themselves of the information in this book.

Book CoverConversations with God: Book One
—Neale Donald Walsch
While no more a conversation with "God" than any other conversation between two spirits, the result is extraordinary, insightful, and refreshing. Walsch's guide relentlessly pushes him to grasp the true nature of being human. Note: Book Three has some uncommon thoughts on un-Earthly beings.

Book CoverThe Imprisoned Splendor
—Stafford Betty
Professor Betty, one of a handful of (English-speaking) people who have made extensive study of the life hereafter, has written an insightful, intriguing, and entertaining story. Unlike other descriptions of heavenly realms, this is a deeply personal tale of a life ended and begun, of love violated and regained. You've never read anything like it.
